地名之緣起與演變

琉球鄉原名為沙馬基，依據史籍記載，元朝時代台灣與沖繩列島合稱琉球或嵧球、琉求。到了明朝改稱沖繩列島為大琉球，台灣為小琉球。到了明朝初改稱台員、大員。到了萬曆未年，荷蘭據台後設市，制若崇臺，海濱沙環水曲曰灣，又泊舟處概謂灣，於是稱為台灣。而人們就將原來的小琉球名稱轉到台灣南部的沙馬基。
